2021 Gauge Report Reveals how GovCons Are Pivoting Amid Pandemic
Sep 22, 2021
Increased competition and cybersecurity top of mind while remote work still rules Dulles, VA, Sept. 22, 2021 – Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, government contractors (GovCons) are optimistic about their future business prospects, according to Unanet and CohnReznick LLP, the joint authors of the fifth annual 2021 Gauge Report. Drawing its findings from a survey of more than 1,400 GovCon representatives from January – May, the Gauge Report highlights the pressures this market is facing, including cyber threats, hybrid work and supply chain disruptions, as well as solutions they are investing in and exploring that are helping to address those issues. “Among the biggest insights from the Gauge Report are how the pandemic’s fall-out has shifted the marketplace,” said Kim Koster, vice president of GovCon strategy for Unanet. “In 2020, the political environment, budgets and talent recruitment ruled, but this year competition was the number one issue causing sleepless nights for executives and managers. Compliance costs also ranked high among GovCon concerns.” GovCons reported their top concern is increased competition, and with a vast increase in government spending, they are actively pursuing new awards. Because GovCons prepare an average of 62 proposals each year, particular attention is being paid to streamlining proposal management to meet tight deadlines, improving communications among proposal preparers and contracting officers, and clarifying proposal scope. More than 70 percent of respondents identified these challenges to delivering winning proposals, so GovCons are increasingly looking at technology tools to help automate and manage these. Cybersecurity is once again on the list of industry concerns, because the federal government relies on GovCons to protect IT environments from hackers and therefore requires Cyber Maturity Model Certification (CMMC). Thirty percent of Gauge respondents indicated they have struggled with CMMC compliance, yet 70 percent plan to achieve Level 3 compliance. Maintaining, monitoring and managing compliance is an ever-changing reality for these GovCons. “The Gauge Report is one of the most useful tools the industry has for understanding what challenges GovCons are facing, and with this knowledge we can work to develop solutions,” said Christine Williamson, CPA, PMP Partner, CohnReznick. “Intelligent technology, effective project management, communication and collaboration have consistently proven to be solutions for this dynamic, ever-changing marketplace.” To download the 2021 Gauge Report, please visit https://hubs.ly/H0WS2QH0. National Design and Engineering Firm ISG Implements Unanet ERP in Just 120 Days Generating Significant Cash Flow and Efficiency Gains
Sep 13, 2021
Firm replaced growth-limiting legacy system for better service, user interface and analysis Dulles, VA, September 13, 2021 – ISG, a nationally recognized multi-disciplinary design and engineering firm, selected Unanet ERP AE to replace its outdated legacy system. Within a few short months, ISG implemented Unanet’s industry-leading ERP across its 11 offices and began reaping the timesaving benefits from new processes, improved cash flow, and real-time insights into its growing firm. ISG’s selection further solidifies Unanet’s increasing appeal and success at replacing status quo legacy systems that have failed to keep up with changing customer needs. In the years leading up to ISG’s move to Unanet AE, the human resources, accounting and project teams at ISG had lived with an inefficient, opaque and ill-fitting legacy ERP system. As the firm grew, the teams became increasingly frustrated with the system as well as the lack of support received from the big-name company behind it. “As our firm grew, we knew we needed to provide more visibility for team leads on overall project performance. We were also looking for ways to complete relatively basic, but time-consuming administrative tasks, such as timesheet reviews and employee onboarding, more efficiently. We also wanted access to live data from our ERP system to manage our business in real-time,” explained Alec Pfeffer, Director of Finance and Accounting at ISG. After a thorough search, ISG selected Unanet AE, which was purpose-built for architecture and engineering firms. Unanet also appealed to ISG for its malleability and scalability, an important consideration for a firm that has been growing through acquisitions and organic expansion of its customer base. Unanet’s ability to meet ISG’s aggressive 120-day implementation schedule was also critical to the move. “We had a hard deadline and the Unanet team delivered on their promise,” added Pfeffer. In the months following the move to Unanet AE, ISG has noted several improvements to its business including: Streamlining 700+ monthly invoices, leading to more consistent and predictable revenue streams and significant increase to cash flow. Using Unanet Connect for Payroll, ISG gained valuable time savings on payroll processing and employee management, allowing the fast-paced company to add to its frontline staff and grow revenue without adding extra overhead costs and personnel within the HR department. Most importantly, ISG gained insights for making better decisions faster due to real-time information being visible across the entire firm. “Because of Unanet AE’s innovative platform, we’re running faster while remaining lean,” said Pfeffer. “We’re increasing revenues and providing a better client experience without adding back-office headcount.” “ISG is a leader in its field and has established itself as one of the nation’s best firms in part due to the strong relationships and care it provides its customers,” said Matt Pantana, SVP of Product for Unanet AE. “Unanet AE’s mission runs in parallel with ISG because we focus first on customer needs and support, then innovate solutions that work. We look forward to a long partnership with ISG.” Unanet AE is a purpose-built ERP for architecture and engineering firms and offers a powerful combination of project management, business intelligence, time and expense tracking, financial, integrations, and prospect management tools in one single source. Unanet has consistently been the ERP solution firms are turning to after experiencing disappointing results with legacy systems that fail to innovate to accompany customers’ needs. Akshay Mahajan in ENR: “Technology Needs to Bridge Generational and Operational Divides”
Aug 19, 2021
Architects, engineers and contractors can use their technology solutions, cloud or desktop, to better communicate The construction industry finds itself straddling two very different worlds. On one hand, the relationships-first business mindset is still an integral part of winning repeat business, yet on the other, decades-worth of institutional knowledge begins to fade with new leaders rising in firms faced with manual processes tied to business pursuit details. While firms still rely heavily on a generation of workers who remember what the business was like before the Internet, the focus today is on future-proofing the business, an undertaking that will rest mostly in the hands of a younger, digitally forward breed of employee. For firms that are proactively planning based on the realities of an aging workforce, the challenge goes beyond merely reconciling these two distinct worlds. Their growth depends on them finding ways to not only blend the traditional — and still highly relevant — relationships-first way of doing business with the digital-first sensibilities and savvy of younger members of the workforce, but to get the best of both worlds.
